In traditional townhouses, the parlor floor sits above the backyard because of the front stoop. The challenge here was linking the living spaces to the garden while making use of the existing cellar, including an ad-hoc extension, as habitable space. Since cellars are exempt from zoning floor-area counts, the 'bonus' square footage allowed living space to flow between levels, transforming the cellar into an inviting hang-out;.
The kitchen includes an eat‑in breakfast bar.
The material character of the interior is established by a continuous steel stair that winds its way to the roof; a view from mid‑parlor level looks back toward the garden.
The primary bath concludes the suite of new spaces.
