project overview
For many young families in New York City, planning for an addition to their family often includes calling an architect. In this story, the dog and the couple outgrew their studio apartment and asked noroof to help them select a one‑bedroom. The project was staged in three parts.
Phase I focused on getting the family moved in. Phase II began in anticipation of a new baby. The goal was to create a sleeping area that could be separated from the main space, allowing the dog and the child to enjoy the rest of the apartment.

Phase III added window seats for storage, seating and baby changing, and a small sleeping pod called the "Cloud‑Catcher." Its panelized exterior integrates a bench and has operable flaps to control interaction with the living space and Diego the dog. The interior structure forms shelves for the child's books and toys.
noroof received a call about Phase IV when the child was joined by a baby brother. The family acquired a larger unit in the building and asked for a few alterations. Phase V is slated to happen before the children become teenagers: a private bedroom on the roof with a view for the parents.
