This project invites students to take on the role of a master detective. The task is to re-open a historical case, which, for us concerns a building. Our “Detective Hall of Fame” includes both Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Clouseau.

  • Stage 1 Documentation and Deposition
Drawing from multiple, and often conflicting sources, small groups attempt to create accurate drawings or models for their building. These documents become the text from which they take their individual readings.
  • Stage 2 Primary Analysis
Individual students draw diagrams of six aspects or principles of the building: parti, circulation, volume, public/private, structure, and site. Three 6” x 6” models combine two orders in each model.
  • Stage 3 Synthesis Model
The primary concepts coalesce in one model as a distillation of orders and principles released from the form of the source.
  • Stage 4 Transformation through Inhabitation
The experience of space is reintroduced through a gallery program with a dark space, a sunlit space, an outdoor court and basic support spaces.
