New Canaan, CT.

The town purchased the Irwin Estate in Fall ‘04 for a new community park. On the estate is a small pool house designed by Landis Gores in 1959, which showcases many of the ideas common to New Canaan’s modern movement. How the Pavilion fits into the planned park has been under debate.

Our team proposes to save the Pavilion by using it as a new center for classic modern architecture and, most importantly, the advancement of new architecture. With the New Canaan Cultural Center (nCCC), the town would gain an administrative front to balance the public interest in modern heritage and the interests of this quiet, family-oriented community. Through exhibits, an archive and lecture venue, the nCCC would improve public access to and understanding of a unique collection of private modern residential architecture. The nCCC is seen as more than a visitors center: It should do just what Irwin Park will do—provide New Canaanites with a new outlet to enjoy and share their community. — K. Brandt Knapp
